Design for Acoustics – Premises and Fields of Research

Zusammenfassung:Design for X means to fit a product to certain life cycle phases or to focus upon certain properties like acoustics. Therefore, methods and tools to handle conflicting requirements are provided within DfX. The core of a DfX approaches in most cases is a set of principles, telling how to design the product in accordance with activities and systems in the product’s life. In order to originate a Design for Acoustics methodology we will analyse established DfX approaches like Design for Assembly to discuss requirements and fields of further research. Starting from a system perspective defining basic properties and classes of relations relevant for the acoustic behaviour, models and design activities affecting acoustics will be discussed. Aside from methodical and technical issues like computer support and the management of knowledge and information, requirements and skills to be addressed by engineers will be highlighted. Based on the analysis premises and fields for research towards a Design for Acoustics methodology and its integration into engineering design will be formulated.
