Headphone Characteristics and their Influence on the Externalization in Binaural Reproduction

Zusammenfassung:Three-dimensional (3D) audio reproduction via headphones is becoming increasingly popular due to the growing market for modern technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR). With the current trend towards new “smart” products in the headphone segments equipped with Bluetooth, Active Noise Control and Hear-Through functionality, 3D audio is also making its way into the consumer market. This raises the question which characteristics of headphones are important for proper binaural synthesis and the associated externalization. To answer this question, we have measured and analyzed acoustical parameters of different types of headphones and stored them in a database. The analysis concentrates not only on the analysis of the absolute headphone transfer function (HpTF), but also on the inter- and intra-individual variability of the HpTF and the acoustic impedance. In addition, we conducted psychoacoustic experiments to investigate the influence of the acoustic impedance of the headphones on the subjective perception of the own voice. This presentation is intended to give an overview of our current work. The individual headphone parameters, their measurement configuration and analysis will be discussed.
