Interactive Rendering of Virtual Acoustic Environments and its Applications in Audiology

Zusammenfassung:Communication in everyday life is not a linear process from a sender to a receiver, but rather a feedback loop, containing the conversation partners and their behavior as well as the hearing device and the device user’s behavior (“communication loop”).Traditional lab-based experiments do not reflect this communication loop, which limits their ecological validity, i.e., the degree to which data and findings reflect real-life hearing-related function. Therefore, new evaluation methods which recreate this loop need to be developed for the ecologically valid evaluation of state of the art and future hearing devices. The basis of such methods is the interactive low-delay rendering of virtual acoustics. In this presentation, underlying rendering approaches and methods in the Toolbox for Acoustic Scene Creation and Rendering (TASCAR) are explained, and applications of this toolbox in the field of audiology are discussed.
